In 2006 the United States Mint began producing the 1 ounce gold buffalo coins in uncirculated and proof versions. The gold buffalo is the first 24k gold coin ever produced by the US Mint. Using the design of James Earle Fraser, who designed the original buffalo nickel, the US Mint has produced one of the most beautiful coins in its history.
Many people will remember times as a young coin collector building sets of the famous buffalo nickel and the gold buffalo coins are also gaining a strong following among collectors. In 2008 the US Mint produced 1/10, 1/4, & 1/2 ounce fractional versions of the gold buffalo. Along with the 1 ounce coins they were very popular. Due to the lack of gold blanks the US Mint halted production (Of the fractionals), never to resume again. These coins have appreciated better than any recent modern coins.
